Abstract

Previous research on repair in mundane conversations between native speakers has shown that other-initiated repair is not as common as self-initiated repair and that there is a preference for self-repair over other-repair. Research on native classroom interaction has suggested that other-repair occurs more frequently in the classroom than in mundane conversation. is research also revealed that other-initiated other-repair does occur in the classroom, but it is not as prevalent as cases of other-initiated self-repair. This paper focuses on other-initiated other-repair and illustrates how and where other-initiated other-repair is performed in native-non-native conversations in a university language lounge and examines how and why the findings from this research are similar or different to the findings of previous research on repair.
