Abstract

Notes

This paper deals synthetically with several aspects of the complex intertwinement between spoken language and interaction. Firstly, the canonical situation of face-to-face interaction and the variety of its forms, characterized by their different structural and contextual components, are hinted at. Some relevant phenomena are pointed out, i.e., other-repetitions, other-corrections and discourse markers, which, together with propositional content and multimodality, contribute to the co-construction of interaction and the sequential development of conversation. Secondly, initial stages of convergence, developments and present trends in interactional linguistics with regard to the relationship between language and interaction are discussed. To conclude, fruitful applications of interactional linguistics in the treatment of language pathologies—which integrate not only theory and practice, but also different disciplinary approaches— are mentioned in the hope that this approach will become widespread.
