This online event showcases findings from new research on this question. Conversation analysis (CA) of real-time video and audio recordings of labour and birth shows how interactions between women in labour, midwives and birth partners take place in midwife-led units. Join Dr Clare Jackson from the University of York and the Study Team to find out more about the research findings and discuss how decisions get made and why the detail of talk during birth matters. '''About the Speakers''' Clare Jackson is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the University of York. Her research uses conversation analysis (CA), which is a method for understanding how talk works. Her recent work uses CA to examine how decisions are made in healthcare discussions. Ellen Annandale is a Professor of Sociology at the University of York. Her research focuses on gender and health, reproduction and childbirth. She is the author of several books, including Women’s Health and Social Change. Sian Beynon-Jones is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the University of York. She has a longstanding research interest in the sociology of reproduction, and has been involved in a number of projects exploring aspects of pregnancy and birth. Alison Brodrick is a Consultant Midwife at Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Her main area of research is women’s experience of labour and birth trauma. The most rewarding part of her role involves working with women to facilitate choice and supporting women who are fearful or anxious of birth.
