Abstract

This contribution investigates storytelling activities within an entertainment show on German television. Based on a multimodal and sequential single case analysis of an excerpt from the show "Zimmer frei" our contribution aims to unravel the characteristics of narratives as they occur as entertaining performances in mass media. On the one hand, the analysis shows how storytellings in mass media sys- tematically differ from mundane storytellings in their sequential organisation. On the other hand, it illustrates how interactional resources for staging and performing on TV contribute to and accomplish the narrative activity. Storytellings on TV cannot be conceived simply as broadcasted ordinary narrative activities, but rather as standing out due to a specific medial theatricality. (Para)verbal, embodied and medial means for stage-managing and performing are intertwined in order to produce storytellings on TV as "dramas to an audience" (Goffman 1974:508).
