Abstract
Anthropologists normally search for the bases of social order among exotic societies or in extraordinary situations, and so tend to overlook the utterly commonplace but fundamental order which people build into their interaction as it occurs. A short transcript of soldiers’ talk is analysed to demonstrate how this order is produced.
