Abstract
This study investigated the politeness strategies employed by Javanese and Minangkabaunese speaking students from Indonesia in thesis supervision sessions with their L1 English speaker supervisors, in an Australian context. The data were examined using the ‘nextness’ procedure of conversation analysis, and analysed using an integrated analytic approach and Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory. The findings showed that there were commonalities and differences in the politeness strategies used due to the nature of their L1s.
