Abstract

When scribes in the ancient Near East inserted an addition into a text they were copying, they often repeated the line of the text that preceded the insertion after the insertion. This phenomenon is called Wiederaufnahme or resumptive repetition by biblical scholars and scholars of the ancient Near East. Drawing from my work "Restarts in Conversation and Literature," I suggest that scribes developed this technique based upon the structure of restarts in conversation (sort of a "scribal restart") and assess how this technique functions in these texts.
