Abstract
This chapter reviews ethnomethodological (EM) and conversation analytic (CA) perspectives on gender. It shows how EMCA – although not devoted primarily to gender – can offer original perspectives on gender in social interaction. This is developed by showing how the principles of EMCA allow scholars to demonstrate the relevance of gender. A triple focus is on gender as a practical situated accomplishment from the perspective of Garfinkel; as a membership categorisation device from the perspective initiated by Sacks; and as having a sequential consequentiality on the organisation of talk and action from the perspective initiated by Schegloff.
