Abstract
This chapter focuses on face-to-face physiotherapy consultations in which a mobile eHealth tool (hereafter “the app”) is introduced to the patient. Based on video-recordings, it examines how physiotherapists and patients accomplish the introduction task. Over the past few decades, the benefits of digital tools in physiotherapy, notably to support patients’ self-management and allow patients’ remote access to physiotherapy, have been stressed and numerous apps have been developed. However, in Switzerland, their implementation in ambulatory practice is slow and the adoption rate remains low overall. Although pressure on physiotherapists to adopt the app is significant, its use in physiotherapy practice is underexamined. We reveal how physiotherapists’ and patients’ organization of the introduction to the app's functions and options for home use involves the operation of patients’ smartphones. The instructional sequences are constantly adapted to the situated contingencies, such as the time constraints inherent to physiotherapy consultations, technological affordances, and patients’ claimed or displayed understanding of the app. Introductions are thereby achieved in a time-efficient way, while expansions on issues that participants consider relevant for the app's use at home remain possible at any time, and participants treat patients’ socialization to eHealth literacy as sufficient for all practical purposes at hand.
