Abstract
This chapter examines how teachers in an intermediate and an advanced Persian language classroom use storytellings to accomplish routine institutional work. In both settings the tellings emerge from the ongoing pedagogical activity, are designed to implement an action related to the teacher’s local instructional project, and serve as real-life examples of the abstract teaching objects. The teachers calibrate grammatical and embodied resources to format recognizable story components and bring the connections between the telling and the object of the instruction into focus for the students. Differences in the category of classroom event that prompts the storytelling become consequential for the unfolding of the story and the ways in which the students participate in the telling. In all, the analysis uncovers how the storytellings operate as professional practice and exhibit the teachers’ competence as language educators.
