Book title | Bridging the Gap Between Conversation Analysis and Poetics: Studies in Talk-In-Interaction and Literature Twenty-Five Years after Jefferson |
Chapter |
Abstract
Building on Jefferson‘s work on poetics and Sacks’ on tying mechanisms, this study investigates the influence of various kinds of associations with prior talk on the way turns are constructed—matters raised, words selected. These associations encompass the repetition of sounds and words, use of co-members of the same category, and punning connections. These are testament to the ‘historical sensitivity’ with which speakers arrive at and design contributions to talk.
