Abstract
Notes
Using conversation analytic methodology, this article analyzes the function of different repair initiators in everyday German conversation. Specifically, the repair initiatiors wer. ‘who.’, wer is ‘who is’, wer is nochmal ‘who is X again’, welcher ‘which’, and was für ‘what x’ are discussed as they are used for repairing person reference. Each repair initiator articulates what the recipient of a reference term has understood and makes clear what specifically needs to be addressed for intersubjectivity to be established. In addition, the repair initiators and the design of the turn in which they are embedded as well as the turn-design of the response give insight into who the coparticipants consider to be at fault for the problem of mutual understanding.
