Abstract
This chapter sets out to provide the research context for the collection. It begins with an overview of the importance and place of storytelling as an intensely human activity. It then introduces conversation analysis by describing its methods derived from the amassed body of research in the field, accumulated since the 1960s. This provides the backdrop to introduce storytelling and the affordances of conversation analysis in the study of storytelling in general. The chapter ends with discussion about applications to learning and education, and the volume’s expected contribution to research in storytelling and to conversation analysis.
