Abstract

By using video-ethnographic data and multimodal interaction analysis, the present study examines how a shift in frame and frame laminations are achieved through embodied actions involving interpersonal touch. The study takes its analytical point of departure in the recognizable multimodal and multisensorial design of interactions between adults and young, 2–3-year-old, children (in early childhood educational settings in Sweden) and explores what are here viewed as “playful,” or ludic, embodied interactional practices. Multimodal configurations involving talk and touch are used by adults (caregivers) as a response to children's non-compliance, as well as to various actions, such as complaints or refusals, indexed by children's negative affective stances (manifesting distress, whining, complaining). A common feature is that playful touch and talk are used to index a positive stance (often, a contrasting stance to the addressee's) and to manipulate the recipient's bodily experiences. Playful re-keying and frame lamination have multiple functions: they are mobilized in the service of instrumental actions, they can also be enjoyable, resulting in a shared positive affect and social ambience. The study contributes to our understanding of human sociality, specifically, caregiving practices as multifaceted, characterized by playfulness and non-serious conduct, during matter-of-fact social interactions.
