Abstract

This introductory chapter begins by situating the current volume within the larger applied linguistic endeavor of problematizing the monolingual bias – with a specific focus on exploring multilingual storytelling from a conversation analytic (CA) perspective. After a brief explication of CA as the method that unifies the ensuing collection of studies, the chapter traces Harvey Sacks’ foundational work on storytelling; offers a synthesis of CA findings on how stories may be launched, told, and responded to; and provides a brief review of the existing literature on multilingual storytelling. The chapter concludes with an overview of the chapters, highlighting the volume’s contribution to enriching CA’s findings on storytelling in everyday interaction, expanding our understanding of storytelling in the second language classroom, and bolstering our argument for the legitimacy and ingenuity of multilingual interaction.
