Abstract
When one says “John is a more rational person than Henry,” many meanings of the word “rational” can be distinguished. Some of these meanings are related to affairs of everyday life, some to affairs of scientific theorizing, and it is the scientific rationalities that writers on social organization and decision making commonly refer to as features of “rational choice.” It is here suggested that other meanings of rationality should be taken into account and treated as data in empirical research.
