Abstract

Abstract

Discursive psychology starts from the notion of discourse, talk and text as social practices, to study how versions of the psychological are constructed within interaction. The goal of this article is to critically review a perspective that currently focuses on growth and overspecialization. I seek to examine the underlying premises of discursive psychology and from which the entire process of knowledge production emanates: its definition, its object of study and its field of action. I make a distinction between two different understandings that appear intertwined in literature, one of an open nature interested in all aspects of social life, the other of a restricted nature focused on discursive constructions of cognition. I seek to criticize the implicit notion that the psychological and the cognitive are synonymous, this understanding of the psychological excludes the possibility of studying other vocabularies that people use in their daily lives. The central argument is that the actual research practice contradicts the original spirit of the discursive perspective and limits its potential. Key words: discourse analysis; social constructionism; qualitative research; interaction; social action.
