Abstract
As scholars both in the UK and we discuss a distinctive approach to developing impact that rests upon close cooperation between academics and practitioners from the outset of a particular project. The approach draws upon ethnomethodology and conversation analysis and addresses the social and interactional foundations of work and organization, an approach that increasingly uses video-recordings of everyday activities augmented by field studies. We discuss examples drawn from our own research, projects concerned with such matters as eye tests, auctions of fine art and urban transport, and seek to show that developing impact in cooperation with practitioners does not necessitate compromising the academic contribution of research.
