The research project ‘Globalizing construction work and local language practices (GLO-LO)’ investigates language practices in multilingual construction work in Finland. The four-year project is funded by the Academy of Finland and takes place at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences at Tampere University, Finland.

The project uses multimodal conversation analysis to analyse how co-workers coordinate courses of social and physical action in construction work. Concrete construction projects will be video-recorded and language practices analyzed from a holistic viewpoint paying attention to the use of different languages, as well as embodied and material resources.

Job description

We are recruiting two postdoctoral researchers for a two-year fixed term period. The postdoctoral researchers are expected to participate in all stages of the research project, including data collection at the construction sites, multimodal transcription, analysis and presentation and publication of results.

The position may also involve some teaching duties and tasks related to organizing seminars and conferences.

The research team consists of the core team in Tampere that is supported by a group of international collaborators and advisors. The research team has strong collaborative networks and offers the post docs valuable opportunities for developing their careers in an international setting.

At the Unit of Languages, and the wider context of the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences you will be part of a thriving multidisciplinary research community, with a lot of possibilities for networking and collaboration in a friendly atmosphere.

Requirements

We invite applications from researchers with a PhD in interactional linguistics or related areas who are familiar with multimodal conversation analysis. We are looking for ambitious researchers who are dedicated to investigating the fine details of multimodal interaction, interested in multilingualism. We value experience in working with video-data and hope that you also already have some experience in international publishing.

You should be fluent in academic English. Knowledge of Finnish or Estonian is an advantage and we value your willingness to work in a multilingual team.

We offer

The position will be filled for a fixed-term period of 2 years. The work is expected to begin on 1 March or as mutually agreed. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The position of a Postdoctoral Researcher is placed on the job demands levels 5-6 (teaching and research staff). A typical starting salary of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is around 3400 EUR/month.
