Abstract
This chapter argues that emotion is organized as interactive practice, rather than as the expression of experience that has its primary locus in the private life of the individual. Analytically this means that the displays of emotion performed by an individual must be analyzed in reference to not only her own body but also the bodies of those with whom she is organizing action. Emotions constitute ways of taking up highly consequential affective stances towards others and actions in progress. The chapter investigates emotion as situated practice through analysis of affective stance as organized through intonation, gesture, and body posture within the interlocking performances of multiple speakers. Of particular importance are incongruent emotional stances that allow participants to construct opposition to the actions and frameworks proposed by others.
