Abstract
The present case study examines multimodal resources that enable young children with still limited verbal resources to initiate narrative interactions. Drawing on lon- gitudinal video recordings of shared book reading interactions, it describes in detail how a 19-month-old child accomplishes different forms of displacements into a narrated temporal and spatial frame. Such transpositions are brought about by ex- panding the space depicted in the book through deictic and depictive gestures or by layering spaces, bodies and voices. Building on the observation that depictive prac- tices are essential resources for evoking a narrative space, the study then traces their acquisition over a period of several months. The longitudinal analysis focuses on the functionality that depictive practices such as acting, handling, modeling and abstract motion have for communicating about phenomena transcending the here and now.
