Abstract
This contribution discusses the recipients' gaze behaviour during hesitant phases in speech. Our observations are based on samples of spontaneous interaction, re- corded by mobile eye-tracking-glasses. During those phases of hesitation the speaker regularly gazes away from the recipient, while – as a general rule – the recipient still gazes at the speaker. However, a more detailed analysis shows that recipients sometimes look away as well while the speaker hesitates. In almost all of these cases, recipients generally gaze back to the speaker 'in due time', which means that there is a state of mutual gaze as soon as the speaker looks at the re- cipient once he enters a phase of fluent speech production. On the one hand this paper thus shows that the micro-coordination of gaze is based on subtler interac- tive regularities than previously assumed. On the other hand we discuss the boundaries of Sacks' postulate of (social) "order at all points" (Sacks 1984:229).
