Abstract
This conversation analytic paper explores the functions of turn-final oder ('or') in mundane German interaction. These oders are produced with either upward or level intonation as in aber das hat denen sicher spaß gemacht oder? ('but it must have been fun for them oder') and und äh tourst du bisher alleine oder_ ('and uhm are you planning on travelling alone oder'). The turns they are part of are formu- lations of understanding in first position and require a response from the co-par- ticipant next. I argue that oder?-turns create polar constraints and make relevant confirmation or disconfirmation. Oder_-turns, in contrast, project an alternative to what was just said and thereby weaken polar constraints.
