Abstract
We will try to bring out how a body of knowledge and the courses of reasoning associated with it, can be viewed as organised to be found, to be used, to be understood, and how the use and understanding of such knowledge and reasoning is the display of its organisation. As our title suggests, our primary interest is in the topography of mathematics as an encountered phenomenon; encountered, that is, with stocks of knowledge and relevances to hand and tasks to be pursued.
