Abstract
This paper presents the results of detailed prosodic-phonetic analyses of retold stories in German. By means of two case studies from interviews with (almost) centenarian tellers, it shows that story tellers are able to reproduce anchoring points of retold stories with strikingly parallel prosodic-phonetic formatting. The realization of other parts of the stories, in contrast, seems to depend more on local contingencies. In addition, the paper underlines the autonomy of prosody and phonetics as against other linguistic dimensions and points towards the influence of the larger interactional context concerning the realization of retold stories. In doing so, it not only contributes to the study of retellings but also to investigating pre-fabricated patterns and the marking of tellability. At the same time, the paper highlights what we can gain from micro-analyses of prosodic-phonetic parame- ters.
