Abstract
This article analyses practices of definition observable in a mutual help group for people suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). The authors apply the analytic tools offered by conversation analysis and propose an endogenous and situated description of the notion of definition. This approach allows the authors to conceive definitions as collective practices through which participants display and negotiate their knowledge and, ultimately, their right to define. Displays of agreement and disagreement appear to be fundamental in the dynamic and interactional achievement of a definition. The article is based on a corpus of interactions in Flemish Dutch.
