|Abstract=In this chapter, we focus on the ways in which children present their problems at a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) in the United Kingdom (UK). A conversation analytic approach is used to explore the interaction between the clinicians and children/young people during the problem presentation phase of their initial assessment appointments. This phase of the appointment is one of the only opportunities a patient has to vocalise their interpretation and understanding of the concerns which have resulted in their attendance (Heritage & Robinson, 2006). In a child-centred service, such as CAMHS, it is important to develop an understanding of the variety of ways children perceive and present the problems affecting them, particularly as attendance tends to be driven by the parents.
