Abstract

Occasionally speakers reach a point of possible turn completion point but decide to continue speaking anyway. In doing so, they can either produce a new turn constructional unit (TCU) or they can expand the prior turn-constructional unit. The focus here is on turn continuations that syntactically and semantically expand prior structures. A preliminary cross-linguistic classification is proposed based on the examination of English, German and Japanese conversational extracts. As different languages provide different lexical, grammatical and prosodic resources for continuing turns at talk, there appear to be skewings within the categories of the cross-linguistic classification depending on what specific resources each language has to offer.
