Abstract
In this contribution, we approach the interactional activity of defining by focusing on the interweaving of the resources of various natures –linguistic, prosodic, gestural and spatial– which the participants use for it. We study definition in guided tours of two gardens (an ethnobotanic garden and a ‘garden in motion'). On the basis of an observed recurring functioning, based on the successive stages of ‘producting the visibility of a referent', ‘giving its name' and ‘defining', we examine the formats used by the participants, in connection with the temporality of the interaction and the nature of the garden. The study highlights how the activity of defining conveys the specific philosophy of the two gardens and offers a very different apprehension of the vegetable world.
