Abstract

This book deals with classroom interaction. It offers a close investigation of interactional practices at university seminars in English as a foreign language. It builds on 987 minutes of video-recordings which were captured during the autumn semester of 2015. Using conversation analysis, the book describes how the participants took turns, managed repair sequences, switched between English and Czech and how they conducted student presentations and subsequent discussions.The book is divided into nine chapters. It introduces the theoretical and methodological background (chapters 1–3) and the settings, participants and data (chapter 4). The following four chapters (5–8) are dedicated to the organization of turn-taking, repair, code-switching and to how student presentations were conducted. Each of these empirical chapters includes a brief conceptual and research overview, a presentation of conversation-analytic outcomes and discussion of findings. The final chapter considers the relationship between conversation analysis and research on learning in interaction. It also discusses the findings in the light of educational research and in relation to the transfer of conversation-analytic findings into practice.The book closely investigates classroom interaction in English language teaching, but it also aims to contribute to the ongoing discussions about researching (not only classroom) interaction.
