Abstract
In March 2000, the Swiss citizens were expected to vote for or against in vitro fertilization in a restrictive referendum. The opening of a radio debate is analysed in order to gather information about how the issue was defined as a public concern. Based on John Dewey's pragmatic approach, such analysis makes it possible to check out the making of a political audience in the Swiss semi-direct democracy.
