Abstract

This paper attempts an ethnomethodological analysis of collective music making in the form of three rehearsal episodes by an amateur orchestra in which the author participated as a double bassist. These rehearsals focus on a combination of tempo changes at the conclusion of one of George F. Handel's Coronation Anthems, "The King Shall Rejoice".1 My central interest is in the temporality of collective music as it is displayed in the contrasting types of expressions of musical time by the participants. In this paper, we shall examine a small sample of such temporal expressions in the form of verbal utterances and singing in their distinctive relations to the playing and the musical score to which they are oriented. In addition, we shall consider the practical and analytical problems in describing and measuring these temporal features for purposes of sociological analysis.
