Abstract

The following paper explores different gaze practices that systematically occur when participants direct their interlocutor's attention to visible entities in the sur- roundings by means of deictic pointing. While a growing body of research in mul- timodal conversation analysis acknowledges the central role of gestures in acts of deictic reference, gaze has remained almost unexplored in studies on verbal and manual pointing. The few existing studies rely on video-recordings that do not al- low a precise analysis of eye gaze. The results of the present study are based on mobile eye-tracking recordings undertaken with two pairs of eye tracking glasses worn by participants in non-laboratory, everyday interactions. The paper expands and refines previous observations on deixis, gestures and gaze. It claims that deic- tic expressions, gesture and eye gaze combine in a very specific way: Gaze consti- tutes a means of interpersonal coordination that goes beyond the regulatory func- tions at work, e.g. in turn taking. Within deictic referencing acts, eye gaze occu- pies specific slots or sequential positions that systematically contribute to, create and display a new status of intersubjectivity among the participants vis-à-vis the phenomenon of joint attention.
