Postdoc at Linköping University in multimodal interaction analysis:

Details:

LINKÖPING UNIVERSITY Hereby advertises a position as

Postdoc in Language and Culture formally based at the Department of Culture and Society (IKOS)

Duties The research environment of Language and Culture is a forum for interdisciplinary linguistic and literary research informed by a cultural perspective.

The research fellow will be working within the project ”Vocal Practices of Coordinating Human Action” (funded by the Swedish Research Council) https://nonlexicalvocalizations.com led by professor Leelo Keevallik.

This project explores the boundaries of language by studying non-lexical vocalizations at the intersection of vocal and embodied behavior. Using the qualitative method of multimodal interaction analysis, the project looks at the capacity of vocalizations to coordinate participants’ bodies in comparison with linguistic directives and instructions. It aims to disclose how fine-grained cooperation is achieved through both verbal and non-verbal means, thus combining linguistics and phonetics with ethnography and microsociology. Its empirical foundation is constituted by video-recorded data from, e.g., manual workplaces, sports coaching, or improvisational arts. One theoretical goal is to build bridges with the field of language origins.

The duties of the postdoctoral researcher include analysis of various materials and research output towards the goals of the project, and in relevant cases fieldwork (video ethnography) and transcription.

A Postdoc will essentially carry out research. The position may also involve teaching, but during no more than a fifth of work time.

Qualifications The position requires a doctorate or an equivalent degree from a foreign university. The doctorate shall have been obtained no longer than three years before the expiration date of the application.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in linguistics, phonetics, anthropology, or equivalent. Requirements for the position are a demonstrated scholarly skill in the entire research process from data collection to high-quality analysis through appropriate methods, an ability to design fieldwork projects, and formulate independent research questions. An excellent command of Swedish or English in speech and writing are also requirements.

Experience in video-based interaction analysis, multimodal transcription skills, and related technological know-how will be deemed as an advantage.

Appointment time A Postdoc is appointed until further notice, but for no longer than two years. The appointment can be renewed if there are special reasons.

Starting date By agreement/January 1st, 2022
