Abstract

Notes

While spatial deixis has been largely described from an interactionist multimodal perspective, this is not the case of time deixis. Within the perspective of multimodal conversation analysis, this paper studies the deictic expression maintenant (“now”), by considering not only his temporal reference, but also the way the temporality of turns at talk, embodied conduct and emergent action shapes its form, its sequential position and its meaning. A particular setting is described, a video recorded training session in which a coach instructs a driver racing on an automobile circuit. In this setting, characterized by mobility and speed, maintenant (“now”) relies very precisely on the instant of its production, within a multimodal Gestalt that is systematically described in the analysis. This shows some consequences of what I call interactional time for the conceptualization of time within grammar in action.
