Abstract

Notes

This contribution examines the activity of interpreting in judicial contexts when it takes place through a video link, with an interpreter who is present in the courtroom and a remote defendant. On the basis of a video recorded corpus of pre-trial remand hearings in France, we compare the resources mobilized for interacting in spatially distributed, video-mediated hearings with those used when the accused and the interpreter are both present in the courtroom. First, the study of these sequences reveals the complexity of interpreter-mediated hearings when they involve remote participants and the mediation of screens: in order to adapt to the interactional constraints that this ecology imposes, the participants resort to interactive resources which differ from those mobilized in face to face interactions. Second, we study the the particular interactional work that is done by remote participants to address the Court via the interpreter. In line with interactional studies of address (Lerner 2003; Clayman 2010, 2013), we analyze the sequential impact of the use of an address term by a person in a distant site.
