Abstract

Transcribing the French primary interjections ah, oh, ouh (foreward : Voc) infers to analyze them as discourse and interactional units. Intonative cues leads to their perceptual interpretation. But these one often seems quite ambiguous when one reads transcripts. We can postulate that suprasegmental features “actualize” Voc in discourse. In so far, these characteristics partly define discursive meaning effects of the Voc in conversational context. Conversely, these particles vocal combinations (and notably their preference system) reveal more accurately the vocalisations semantic schematic value. This leads to discuss a number of options referred to the Jefferson’s CATS, ordering to transcribe Voc particles, that stand up between vocal and verbal levels. Our own methodologicaldecisions aim to show how the interjections affect the participants interpretative activity. Several examples of vocalisations, drawn of service encounter spoken datas, are analysed in order to display howtranscription’s conventions help to define semantical and pragmatical meaning of these primary interjections as interactional units.
