Abstract

The everyday use of objects, placed in a workspace, can play the role of a scaffolding or external aid for action control as much as an advice or a verbal instruction can facilitate the accomplishment of a difficult task. The paper underscores how spatial and graphic properties act as action aids. Two examples will illustrate the role of spatial representations for action control: the touch screen in automated ticket delivery and the Starbuck drink cup.
