Description of Workshop
Central to the sequential analysis of conversation and other forms of talk-in-interaction by participants is the position and positioning of actions as parts of sequences of action. This workshop is designed to give participants experience making observations about action sequencing in general and sequence organization in particular. Accordingly, this action sequencing ‘workout’ will take the form of data analysis sessions (using English language audio field recordings). In addition, some small group homework will be required in preparation for the second day. The data analysis sessions will take two forms:
1. Sessions in which an ‘analytic key’ will be applied to a conversation as a technical way to expose the practices employed by participants (rather than, for example, starting the examination of data by describing its ‘plot line’);
2. Sessions focusing on how actions are sequenced with the aim of developing a positionally-sensitive description of the actions that make up a sequence of actions.
