Summary: This PhD studentship presents an exciting opportunity to join a European research network investigating the problem of persistent physical symptoms and the way that clinicians deal with them. During the studentship you will contribute to the development and evaluation of innovative training materials for clinicians and you will graduate with a PhD from the University of Sheffield.
The aim of this project is to plan, develop and evaluate a training package for medical students and doctors to provide person-centred explanations for Persistent Physical Symptoms which value the person’s experience and minimise stigma.
The research comprises 3 phases: understanding current practice, intervention development, and evaluation.
The research is funded as part of a Horizon 2020 (H2020) / Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN).
The network “ETUDE” will comprise 15 ESRs hosted at 11 academic and 19 partner organizations across 10 European countries.
The academic teams include clinical academics from a range of specialties, epidemiologists, psychologists, and linguists. The network will provide a highly multidisciplinary and intersectoral training for the ESRs, including short courses in advanced science and translational skills and network-wide training schools.
The post will be based in the Medical Education Department of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health at the University of Sheffield. The supervisors are Professor Chris Burton, in the Academic Unit of Primary Care and Dr Traci Walker in Human Communication Sciences. It includes planned secondments to the European Pain Network (Belgium) Radboud University Medical Centre, (Netherlands) and Grasshopper Films, (Germany).
You must have a first-rate academic record to date and be able to simultaneously consider the effects of clinical communication on stigma and the opportunities to change it using the emerging science of functional disorders from across the network. You should have a BSc (or equivalent experience) in a relevant social, psychological, or communication science and experience in or enthusiasm for using qualitative methodology(ies) to analyse naturally-occurring spoken data.
