Abstract
Cet article analyse l’organisation des ouvertures de conversation téléphoniques Skype. Par-delà leur apparente variabilité et complexité, il montre que celles-ci exhibent une forme d’organisation séquentielle, fondée sur des attentes normatives concernant le traitement par les participants de leurs apparitions mutuelles (entendues comme des transitions reconnaissables dans les capacités d’interaction disponibles à un moment donné de l’ouverture), et centrée du point de vue séquentiel autour de la paire adjacente’apparition/salutation’. On montre comment cette perspective analytique est à la fois pertinente pour comprendre les ouvertures d’interaction en général, et féconde pour rendre compte tout particulièrement de la complexité des ouvertures de conversation par Skype, et de la présence dans celles-ci a) de séquences de « multiples salutations » et b) de certains types de salutations qui indexent réflexivement des transitions dans les modalités de la présence mutuelle, comme l’expression française « coucou ». Les participants gèrent ainsi les problèmes rencontrés au cours de l’ouverture de la conversation visiophonique de sorte que celle-ci peut ressembler à une sorte de chorégraphie de multiples apparitions et salutations.

“Appearances”, multiple greetings and “coucou”: The sequential organization of videophone conversation openings on Skype
This article analyses the organization of Skype conversation openings. It shows that, apart from these openings’ apparent variability and complexity, they exhibit a sequential form of organization. This organization is based on normative expectations concerning participants’ treatment of their mutual appearance (understood as recognizable transitions in capabilities to interact) and, from a sequential point of view, revolves around the “appearance/greeting” adjacent pair. The author shows how this analytical perspective is relevant to understanding interactional openings in general, and is fertile specifically for accounting for the complexity of Skype conversational openings, and for the presence therein of : a) “multiple greeting” sequences, and b) certain types of greeting that reflexively index transitions in the modalities of mutual presence, such as the French expression “coucou” (“Hi”). The participants thus deal with the problems encountered during the opening of the videophone conversation so that so that it is achieved in what looks like a finely coordinated choreography of multiple appearances and greetings.
