Abstract

ragments drawn from videorecordings of actual medical consultations are analysed to address the ways in which pain and suffering is managed in the interaction between patient and doctor. In particular the analysis explores how the organisation of diagnostic work informs the expression of "unpleasant" physical sensations in the consultation and constrains the ways in which medical practitioners are sensitive to and deal with the suffering of their patients. The materials suggest, that the revelation, perhaps even experience of pain and suffering in the medical consultation, is embedded in the individual's participation in the interaction and the local accomplishment of specific social actions and activities.
